Framing Make Overs

Our customer inherited these two paintings from her aunt.  She loved both of the images but the frames were old and stained.  Not only would they not fit her décor they no longer set off the paintings.  She was keeping the Italian street scene and Derby Tavern was going to her brother.  We needed both framing that went with each of their distinct taste differences, and to  choose frames that would bring the paintings back to life.

For the Italian Street Scene we chose a moulding from Lucerne collection by Larson-Juhl.  Named for Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, this new collection pays homage to the fluidity and movement of the lake with soft, deep, natural tones enhanced with subtle hand-hewn texture. We chose the 3 5/8” wide panel, its sculptural shape creates a dramatic look, drawing your eye to the artwork.  Its color Sage is a warm buttery green.  We antiqued the silver shade of liner to soften the overall effect.

For the Derby Tavern we need a more contemporary look.  A single frame added no depth and the filet was lost on its own next to the art, the solution was to stack three moulding.   We chose two widths of moulding from the Cranbrook collection by Larson Juhl.  A solid walnut in natural wood tones and sophisticated shapes, its simplicity is a characteristic that is likely to keep it around for quite some time.  We added a filet from Larson Juhls Aegean collection.  This undulating filet is rock grey with variegated earth tones echoing the colors in the painting.

This t-shirt was much loved and well worn by our customers’ husband.  She wanted to preserve it in a way that would allow him to enjoy it everyday.  We have an example, in our shop, of a baby gown in a shadowbox frame, floating atop a suede mat backing.  That style wasn’t going to work for this shirt.  We decided mat and frame it like a piece of art.  We did not cut the shirt; instead we stretched it around a piece of archival foam-core.  The saturated colors of matting made the shirt look faded so we opted for a black fabric wrapped liner and topped it with the ½” Nouveau moulding by Larson Juhl.   Nouveau's organic lines and intertwining forms are typical of the Art Nouveau period, we choose the luxurious gilded bronze  finish.
